Evaluation Part 1

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Firstly, I believe that our media product, The Journey, definitely uses forms and conventions of real media products. For example all the equipment we used throughout the process of filming our media product, such as: cameras, tripods, dolly cams, steady cams and lights that were all provided by the school. we used equipment such as the steady cam so we can get a steady shot of an over the shoulder shot of Jack admiring his football shirt. Also the software that we used also uses forms and conventions of real media products, The software that we mainly used includes programmes Final Cut Pro X and Motion. Our main editor was the one person who spent the most amount of time using these programmes. We used these programmes to edit or footage, Final Cut Pro X was used to actually edit the footage, so cut it up and add the soundtrack etc. As for Motion, we attempted to use this programme to add moving and just overall better looking titles. Unfortunately, due to time we were unable to spend much time on this and adding interesting titles. All of these things are used in both Independent and Hollywood film companies in order to produce their film, without these programmes and equipment companies would not be able to make their media products.

Furthermore, our media product does use some forms and conventions of real media products. This is because film companies that produce Drama/Sport genre films and most of the time going to be independent film companies, such as Channel 4 and BabyCow productions which is our film company, this follows this convention because our film is an independent film. It would not make sense if our film was a big Hollywood film as it is rarely seen that a sport drama film is produced and funded by a Hollywood company, which would certainly goo against the forms and conventions of real media products.

However, I do also believe that our media product goes against the forms and conventions of real media products because our media product is a drama with a sub genre of sport which is very rare in the film industry because there is very few films that have a main genre of drama and a sub genre of sport the few that I know of is Bend it Like Beckham and the Goal! Trilogy.
