Title sequence - Final Edit

Title Sequence- Final Edit

This is the final edit and final version of our title sequence, The Journey.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

I believe that at the beginning we struggled a lot with time management and sacrifices, we did hardly any work as a group and we failed to do work together but as time progressed we saw that working together was the best way to get work done and get it done to a reasonably high standard. I believe that now we are a much better group and the work that we have produces is much better than we all expected.

As my blogging and evaluation goes i think that at the beginning I did not put in enough work and was on track for failure but then I realised that not putting effort into it will only lead to nothing so I started to work harder and hopefully it will pay of as I believe that overall I have done a good job in both blogging, evaluating and contributing in the group projects whether that be filming or planning

Evaluation Question 7

Question: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product? This is the last of our evaluation of our title sequence project, in this audio we discuss what we believe we have learnt from filming our preliminary task to now finishing our final task.

Evaluation Part 6

Evaluation Question 6

In this video we discuss which different media technologies we used in the process of creating our title sequence as well as what we have learnt whilst using them.

Evaluation Part 5

Evaluation Part 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Firstly, I believe that we attracted and addressed our audience by creating a character that appealed to many males of different ages as the different problems that he faces are some that most boys will have to face and what men have most probably already encountered. In The Journey we see our protagonist Jack portrayed at two different ages one when he is 12-13 and the other 17-18, this helps us attract a wider audience as it will appeal to boys aged between 10-20 as the younger audience will want to see what they can become if they work hard and the older audience can see what they could have done differently. All of this could be related to real life issues, the common interest of football or having dreams of being successful. In addition to this our media product could also attract an older audience as the story line may bring a nostalgic feel of following dreams and aspirations they had when they were younger.

Furthermore, the star power that we have in the movie, with Tom Holland, (who plays our protagonist) who is due to play Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider Man film and Jacob Tremblay, (who plays younger Jack) who featured in Smurfs 2. We felt that these two up and coming, young actors would be perfect for or film as they will relish at the chance to be in an independent and niche film such as ours. We do believe that have these actors featuring in our media product we will attract a wider audience as they are not only young but well known and well received actors to.

On top of this we also asked the groups in our class to watch our title sequence and give us feedback on what they thought went well and what we could improve on. As a whole the feedback was not very positive as most people didn't understand the narrative. We found the feedback beneficial as we knew what we had to improve on and what will help attract and address our audience.

Evaluation Part 4

Evaluation Question 4

Evaluation Part 3

Evaluation Question 3

In this Youtube video we discuss the fact the our film is an independent film and as a result this will limit our options on distribution. This is because we haven't got a big enough budget in order for us to advertise and release our film to a mass audience.

Evaluation Part 2

Evaluation Question 2

How Does Your Media Product Represent a Particular Social Group?

My media product can represent a few different social groups, but the main one has to be the working class.

This is because the main focus of our film is to show how Jack can go from a single parent household with the one source of income which is clearly not enough to support the family to a successful rich footballer that can support his mother and still afford many expensive luxuries for the both of them. Once Jack became the famous and wealthy football star his personality had a drastic change for the worse he went from being very humble, caring and passionate young man to a egoistic, arrogant and very boastful of his talent which shows how much fame can change someone.
In addition to this, working class individuals usually seek immediate gratification thus our protagonist being deeply passionate about football however he did have a begin to doubt his ability in the sport which was furthered by the hostility of his "friends". As a result of this, similarly to young working class kids today, it is likely that Jack would've given up on his football dream in order to pursue an average 9-5 job. However due to the support of his coach who was a father figure in Jacks life, he was able to guide Jack in the direction of his dreams and keep him motivated and passionate which essentially led him to his success. This is also a great example of the elderly social group that is seen as very wise and inspirational.

Despite Jack letting fame get to his head he continues to posses both traits from working class and upper class man. Although he becomes quite conceited, everything he's revisited by his past he becomes very humble and emotional. An example of this is where in one scene he's looking at his football top from his childhood team and he is very sentimental and deep in thought. This shows that he still remembers where we came from and the struggles he faced to get there.

Evaluation Part 1

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Firstly, I believe that our media product, The Journey, definitely uses forms and conventions of real media products. For example all the equipment we used throughout the process of filming our media product, such as: cameras, tripods, dolly cams, steady cams and lights that were all provided by the school. we used equipment such as the steady cam so we can get a steady shot of an over the shoulder shot of Jack admiring his football shirt. Also the software that we used also uses forms and conventions of real media products, The software that we mainly used includes programmes Final Cut Pro X and Motion. Our main editor was the one person who spent the most amount of time using these programmes. We used these programmes to edit or footage, Final Cut Pro X was used to actually edit the footage, so cut it up and add the soundtrack etc. As for Motion, we attempted to use this programme to add moving and just overall better looking titles. Unfortunately, due to time we were unable to spend much time on this and adding interesting titles. All of these things are used in both Independent and Hollywood film companies in order to produce their film, without these programmes and equipment companies would not be able to make their media products.

Furthermore, our media product does use some forms and conventions of real media products. This is because film companies that produce Drama/Sport genre films and most of the time going to be independent film companies, such as Channel 4 and BabyCow productions which is our film company, this follows this convention because our film is an independent film. It would not make sense if our film was a big Hollywood film as it is rarely seen that a sport drama film is produced and funded by a Hollywood company, which would certainly goo against the forms and conventions of real media products.

However, I do also believe that our media product goes against the forms and conventions of real media products because our media product is a drama with a sub genre of sport which is very rare in the film industry because there is very few films that have a main genre of drama and a sub genre of sport the few that I know of is Bend it Like Beckham and the Goal! Trilogy.

Filming Day 16

On Thursday 13th, Jack and Kaan got the train to White Hart Lane, home of Tottenham Hotspur, to get some footage around the ground and of a poster inside the Spurs shop. We did this because older Jack does sign for his boyhood club, Tottenham and we felt it would be a good idea to include some footage, and an over the shoulder shot, in the title sequence. We took a tripod and camera with us.

Title Sequence First Edit

This is our first edit of our title sequence. I like this first edit as is shows a bit of rawness and passion linked in with the soundtrack which is what we were really aiming to achieve.
However a criticism is the lack of titles which we intend to add in later. It'll help in creating a house style for our film. Another criticism is lacks in explaining the narrative which is essential for our title sequence as it is, as well as being a title sequence, meant to show the beginning of our film.
As you can see it is very short. We need to film more scenes, preferably football scenes and images that will help in understanding the narrative.

Soundtrack

Soundtrack

Unfortunately the soundtrack that we previously chosen was not suitable for the footage that we filmed so, today, as part of constructing our title sequence and starting to prepare and gear towards the first screening of our title sequence, myself and Jack started to look for a suitable soundtrack for our title sequence, The Journey. Our aim was to find a touching and smooth song with the characteristic of a build up. This is because our title sequence is a comparison between younger Jack and older Jack and we felt a build up in the title sequence would be very suitable and receive positive feedback. We firstly found The xx - Intro but however this soundtrack is copyrighted so unfortunately we could not use this soundtrack.

Filming Day 15

Filming Day 15

Image result for premier league ballToday I filmed my brother ( who plays younger Jack) watching a football match in the living room on the TV and filming his reaction to the game to get a real sense of the passion that Jack has for the game. I also filmed my brother walking up to a set of trophies that were arranged and sitting in front of famous footballers such as Messi and Neymar, i also placed the ball we used at goals and for the kick ups at the centre of all of this so he can go up to the call, trophies and the pictures and pick up the ball.

Filming Day 14

Filming Day 14

Image result for kid kick ups

Today I filmed my brother (who plays younger Jack) doing kick ups in the garden with the same ball we used when we filmed at goals, then with the footage we are going to get Jack to do the same in my garden again to show narrative and time progressing. the only problem was that the weather was not the best so we may have to film again if it does not suit the title sequence.

Filming Day 13

Filming Day 13

Image result for trophy
Yesterday, Kaan was able to film at his house. he filmed trophies that the younger Jack won and a book that younger Jack drew in and drew the animal that represents the club that Jack supports which is a lion and also had a picture of jack wearing number 15. However there was a problem with the pan of the trophies which is you could see Kaans name on some of them so we may have to re film this and make the shot wider.

Feedback

These are the feedback sheets from two of the three groups that analysed our first edit.

Feedback

1st viewing Feedback

After our first viewing to our class we got feedback from other groups and our teacher.

The main feedback we received was that there was no sense of narrative. Because our title sequence is meant to set up the story line, leading into the main plot of the film it is important that it tells the story unlike other title sequences that may be quite abstract. As a result of this feedback we plan to film more football related shots as well as shots that establish the different settings. Another interesting idea we could do to make the narrative clearer is adding dialogue so the audience will know exactly what is going on. Or better yet we could include images that will be inter grained in the title sequence whilst telling the audience what is happening e.g. newspaper reports.

As a result of this feedback we are going to use our best efforts to improve our title sequence and make sure that it has a strong sense of narrative.

Filming Day 12

Filming Day 12

Today we went back to the dance changing rooms. We hung football shirts on the pegs all around the room to create mise en scene. We placed the football shirt with the number 10 directly under the light as it was jacks number when he was younger and his number now that he's signed. We did a pan around the room showing all the shirts until finally stopping at number 10 where we did a over the shoulder shot with jack looking at the shirt. we also got another angle that we could possibly use to add a title on, when we got jack to walk past a few of the shirts then stop at his and stare at his future.

Filming Day 11

Filming Day 11

Unfortunately our plans for filming throughout the weekend fell through when on Sunday we discovered the tripod we rented out was faulty so we tried to film jacks football match with a handheld camera. The footage came out very fuzzy and shakey so we couldn't use it. Also on Sunday my mum was going to film my younger brothers football match as he plays the younger jack in our film. Unfortunately due to lack of consent from the other kids and their parents playing in the match, we did not have permission to film. We have come up with a new filming schedule in which we hope to get all the footage we will need by next Friday.

Soundtrack

Soundtrack

The soundtrack we finally decided to use is very orchestral. with simple piano chords at the start then violins come in to quicken it up and then even more violins and drums. There is then a short break in the music then a rumbling of the drums introduce the crescendo of the soundtrack making it reach its loudest and most atmospheric point. I'd say our soundtrack is very inspirational and fitting to our film because the very simple and almost timid beginning of the song correlates to the attitude of our protagonist at the beginning of his journey and then he grows and grows until finally reaching a crescendo which in our characters life would represent him signing his football contract and becoming such a well respected sportsman and most importantly finally achieving his dream.

Filming Day 10

Filming Day 10

Today we will film on our schools huge football field. Conveniently Jack had to teach a year 8 PE class so we will film the kids playing a football match as if it was young Jack playing football in his unprofessional football club before the fame with all his peers.

Editing

Editing

Image result for final cut pro

Today me and Jack edited footage that we filmed yesterday in the dance changing rooms. Me and Jack sat down together in the mac room, and both went on the same mac then we went onto final cut, opened up what we have filmed so far and added the changing room scene onto the edited footage, once we were happy with putting the scene in the right place and adding transactions and effects onto it, we added titles in spots where they looked suitable. Also because the other footage did not yet have titles on them so me and jack added titles onto the previous scenes as well.

Filming Day 9

Filming Day 9

Image result for changing roomsToday we went back to the dance changing rooms and filmed Jack taking all his new shiny football equipment out of his expensive training bag. We laid it out in a line and filmed across the clothes so titles can appear on them.

The camera was sometimes out of focus and blurry therefore we may need to redo some of the scenes.

Filming Day 8

Filming Day 8

Today Jack and Kaan went to the same dance changing rooms that Tolani, Jack and I went to yesterday and they were able to film the footage that we were unable to film which was Jack taking out the kit he received when he signed his contract. They used the exact same equipment that we used before which was a light, a tripod, a dolly and a camera. they also re-filmed what we shot yesterday because there is a skylight and when we went it was closed and when Jack and Kaan went it was open which let more light in, which actually made it look a lot better and lighter.

Wednesday 15 March 2017

Filming Day 7

Filming Day 7

Tolani, Jack and I went to the dance changing rooms to film Jack walking into the changing room and sitting down. We also wanted to film Jack unpacking his kit he received when signing his contract but we ran out of time.

We filmed the same type of tracking shot that we did in the football changing rooms, however instead of scruffy football boots Jack was wearing smart loafers as it isn't long after he's just signed his football contract.

We brought additional lighting to the changing rooms with one set of lights to make filming brighter as when we shot in the football changing rooms it was quite dark however we thought we'd keep that dark footage to represent the darkness and grit and roughness of his life then.

Unfortunately due to time we were unable to film everything we wanted to film.

Filming Day 6

Filming Day 6

Today we filmed a kid in a younger year just to sign a contract that looked like he made so it shows that the young jack always dreamed of signing a football contract for Tottenham and it it shows that from a very young aged he was always hard working and committed to fulfilling his dreams. We made sure our drawings and handwriting was messy and immature so it seems like a young boy did it. We are also thinking about maybe incorporating some credits onto it.

Filming Day 5

Filming Day 5

We found a new location to film Jack sign his contract for Tottenham. Kaan, Jack and Tolani went into a computer room and cleared a desk in the centre of the room, because there were still computers around the room, to avoid making the setting not look like a convincing office/meeting setting, we did an over the shoulder shot of jack signing the contract and also a birds eye view shot of the contract which we captured by Kaan standing over jack on a chair.

Filming Day 4

Filming Day 4

Unfortunately I was unable to attend school when Kaan went to the school changing room and filmed the changing room and the environment of them. The floors were muddy and dirty which is perfect for what we are trying to achieve with Jack starting of poor and disadvantaged to a rich young professional. I also think that it is good that the changing room looks quite crowded and compact.

it make it like convincing that he is just a poor boy and nothing special.

Filming Day 3

Filming Day 3

This is the contract that we used for Jack to sign for Tottenham. we got it from searching 'Football contract template'. This is the contract that we saw Jack sign in the scene.

Filming Day 3

Filming Day 3

Today Jack and Tolani went to the school library to film Jack signing his contract for Tottenham, they printed of a fake football contract and took a number of different shots such as close ups and behind the shoulder.
Unfortunately we cannot use this footage as in contains mis-en-scene that does not look like a place that a player would sign his contract. Also the footage is really dark and it is meant to be a happy moment in the title sequence so it should be bright and lit up.
We are looking for another location that we can film this scene in so it looks realistic and we will us lights to make sure that is is bright and looks like a happy event in the title sequence.

Filming Day 2

Filming Day 2

Today me, Tolani and Kaan shot medium wide shots in order to establish setting. We filmed our school football pitch which looks quite rough and deserted to show where he first started playing football before becoming rich and playing on expensive professional looking astro turf football pitches. This shows that our protagonists start in life was in a poor neighbourhood and he didn't have much. It shows the financial and social struggle he faces along with him being alone and feeling lonesome.

Filming Day 1

Filming Day 1

On the first day of filming Kaan and I knew of a perfect location that will show that Jack started from nothing with very low quality pitch and not so good goals. So went to goals in Bexleyheath to film
my brother portraying a young jack.

We went to Goals on Thursday 21st of February we arrived at 5 pm when we arrived we started experimenting with the pitch and angles of where we wanted to get shots from. it took us around 30 minutes to setup in a way we believed we would get the best and most interesting shots. Then we began to film at around 5:30 pm we started just be filming simple shot of my brother dribbling and taking shots against the keeper.

After about 20-30 minutes of filming that we tried to switch up the shot and started filming my brother taking shots from further away to get variation in the shots. We are still missing footage of my brother playing against another team in a real match.

Release Date

Release Date

We have chosen the release date for our film to be Friday 14th of April because it is during the Easter holidays and therefore this will mean kids are off school so we hope that this will increase the gross overall and the gross during the opening weekend as more of our target audience are able to go and view the film.

Budget

Budget

Due to our film being independent we have to consider that the average budget of a independent film is only around £1 Million, we believe that a suitable budget for our film would be £3.5 Million this will allow us to make a high quality film and due to us not relying heavily on C.G.I. we believe that we will need more money to make it seem realistic. Our target for the opening weekend is £1.5 Million and we hope the final total gross to be £4 Million-£4.5 Million. We believe that our multiple production companies will be able to market our film successfully and reach out to the widest audience possible.

Typography

Typography

Here are some of the fonts my group and I considered using for our title and also the font we have decided to use and why.

My group and I have decided to use the font Jersey M54. This is because we felt as if this font suited the title and that the other options we had looked at were more suitable in a cartoon picture or a magazine cover. In addition, we also asked some of our classmates what font they would feel would be the best to use and the vast majority agreed with us and chose Jersey M54 to be the most suitable. Moreover, on a deeper level we chose this font because of the rough edges the font has and we felt as if this linked to the film because it shows that nothing is smooth in life and there will always be challenges and obstacles in your way.

Narrative (Todorov)

Equilibrium - This is where Jack, the protagonist, is at school, his mum is a single mum, they are not well off and Jack has an interest in football but he is unable to fully pursue his dream of being a professional footballer due to the fact he doesn't have good football boots and has no encouragement. His PE teacher acts like a father figure to him and encourages him to keep on following his dreams. He has a contact who is a scout for Tottenham Hotspur and organises and trial for Jack. Jack then gets signed by Tottenham and has the financial support he has always lacked, allowing him to buy nice football boots and clothes.
—Disruption - Jack starts to let the fame get to his head and some of his friends start to lose patience with him.
—Disequilibrium - Jack gets injured playing for Tottenham and the person who injured him was one of his bullies from Secondary School. Jack breaks his ankle and is out for a lengthy amount of time, whilst he is recovering a friend of his visits him a lot and they get closer.—Attempt to restore Equilibrium - Jack is recovering from his injury and is striving to hit the form he once hit. His aim is to return for the cup final. His girlfriend says to him that she doesn't want him to behave like he did before.—New Equilibrium - Jack returns for the cup final, against the team in which he broke his ankle against. Jack scores the winning goal.

Audience Profile

—As a football film, the target audience of the movie will be young male teenagers. The main reason being that most teenagers play football and always dream of becoming a footballer. Teenagers will be the primary audience as well as football fans. I would argue that the secondary audience of our film will be young adults. This is because the films' sub genre is drama, so they will take the film a bit more seriously compared to young teenagers who would mainly be going to the film because of its sports genre. We also believe the secondary audience of this film would be young adults because some of the issues in the film could be similar to things those people are currently going through/have gone through and they can relate to the charter in he film.

Budget

—The budget for our film is £3,500,000. We believe that it is a suitable amount in order to make a successful film and our target in the opening weekend is £1,500,000 and we hope the final total gross to be £4,000,000-£4,500,000. We hope our multiple production companies will market our film successfully as well as organizing for our film to feature at at least two film festivals, which would hopefully lead to a positive critic reception and nominations for awards.

Director

—The director of our film is Frank Darabont. We chose this director because he has proven himself as a very successful director with directing films and series such as The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead (2010-2011). His successes in drama was vital to us because that is the main genre of our film and some of his other works have been with films with small budgets. This proves that he can make a good film with a small budget. His success with films and series with different sub genres also attracted us to use him because it proves that he is not limited to one sub genre and is very flexible.

Release Date

—We have chosen the release date for our film to be Friday 14th of April because it is during the easter holidays and therefore this will mean kids are off school so we hope that this will increase the gross overall and the gross during the opening weekend. We have also chosen this time of year because it is just before the summer, which means that film festivals will be looking to nominate films for awards. We hope that our film will be considered for nomination and even possibly have a chance at winning an award. This is because one of the main successes for an independent film is to feature at film festivals and receive awards. In addition, many film critics will be at the film festivals and independent films also look for positive critic reception.

Saul Bass

Title Sequence Designer: Saul Bass

As a group we chose two pairs so one could research and write about Kyle Cooper and the other Saul Bass. This is what Tolani and Kaan researched about Saul Bass.

Saul Bass started out his career being a graphic designer and filmmaker but is best known for his film posters and title sequences . He grew to fame in the film industry after creating the title sequence for The Man With The Golden Arm by Otto Preminger in 1955.

After watching a few of Bass' title sequences I've noticed a correlation in which he repeatedly uses atmospherically classical instrumentals that are appropriate for the genre of the film. He also enjoys presenting the credits on a plain background with simple transitions and patterns or images that may move across the screen. They don't give away much of the narrative or create narrative enigma as they are quite abstract thus having no immediate impact on the audience.

The Incredible Hulk- Title Sequence Analysis

The Incredible Hulk- Title Sequence Analysis

The use of fast transitions of comic pages at the start of the title sequence implies that it is a fiction movie where everything is not real. It is also signifies that it could be an adaptation of a media text from the comic and make a movie from it. After that, the name of the production appears, ‘Marvel Studio’. Most people know that Marvel is famous for comics. So the evidence of the movie is an adaptation from the comic is quite strong.
Image result for the incredible hulkThe use of fades out of the page saying ‘Marvel Studio’ to the black and fades in to the page saying that what they want to present. The use of black colour for the fades out signifies the genre of the movie.
Power, fear, strength, formality, authority and sophistication are associated together creating an adventure and action movie. The colour of the fonts that has been used showing the names of key production and cast members is in green. This signifies that green is the main colour of this movie or maybe it signifies the main character? Green connotes peace, yet it also symbolises witchcraft, evil, jealousy, vigour and toxicity. This colour mirrors the characters personality.
The background image showing skull and scan photos connote that it is a sci-fi genre. This is because the uses of technology of medical cue to support the genre strongly. The movie belongs to the sci-fi genre anchored by low-key lighting and plots effect in the mise-en-scene.
It is using crescendo sound where the sound going higher and higher showing the action part of the movie giving high intense to the audience.
The face expression of the man in the lab looks relaxing and not stressed. His hands are being tied to the chair, he could be volunteered for the experiment because his face expression shows that he is not scared or worried. A woman looks at him and he looks back at her then winked at her. This part shows that the woman is concerned about the man and he actually reassures her by winking at her. The close-up shot clicking the button and the chair moving shows that the experiment is starting. The danger sign on the button is in red which signifies that something unexpected could happen. It also could mean security and attention for the lab workers to be careful.
The man’s eyes colour changed to green. His body changed to bigger size and the diegetic sound anchored by monster this indicates that the man is changed resulting to the radiation. The point of view showing that he has different sight as human also signifies that he changed into The Hulk. He starts to destroy things in the lab and hurt people, we see this from a point of view shot. He even hurts the woman that he likes which means that he doesn’t even know what he’s doing since his anger has taken over.
The woman lies on the hospital bed wounded and swelling. The long mid shot of a man’s back looking at her worriedly. Just looking at his hand gesture and body language can see that he is worried.
The use of newspaper articles is written codes giving out clue to what is actually happening and what The Hulk has done to the city. The scenes mostly happen at nighttime and dark place creating enigma codes and high intense to the audience when they are watching it.

Se7en- Title Sequence Analysis

Se7en- Title Sequence Analysis

Typography- The font used in the opening sequence is a computerised hand written font. The writing looks handwritten yet it is disjointed and irregular. The effect of scratched and imperfect writing accompanied by the black background could be reflective on the killers disturbed mental state. The leading is not in sync which conveys the scattered pattern of the killers psychopathic thought process and mental instability.

Mise-en-scene- the use of everyday tools gives off an unsettling atmosphere because we are focusing on the sharp edges and although we can see they are ordinary objects we are pondering  the ways in which they can be dangerous when used in certain ways. The flickers of rough writing and Bible passages make it clear that the man in the sequence is slightly unhinged. The use of the Bible passages makes it more obvious that this man, due to the way we see the set ups in that background it is clear that the Bible is not being used well.

It is not the simple objects that are unsettling, there are images of people who have most likely been murdered and these images are in what seems to be a scrapbook, this adds to the unease of the whole scene.

Sound and Music- The music created an eerie feeling as it seemed to give a sense of being watched, highlighting the psychological thriller genre. The amplified screams are non diegetic sounds that cause a feeling of discomfort and insecurity, generating the idea of helplessness, additionally giving it a thriller feeling. The monochromatic visuals are contrapuntal to the music, which has a low beat which builds tension and the feeling of mystery.
